Inital Ideas

Initial idea poster 1-My idea for this poster is to have a person looking sad in the middle of the poster and having new alerts about the covid virus around them.

Initial idea poster 2-My second idea for a poster is to have a closing due to covid sign and to add an effect to make this stand out as a poster.

Initial idea poster 3-My third idea for a poster is to have a close up of somebody in the mask looking down the camera with a different effect.

Initial idea poster 4-My fourth idea is to have a movie style poster and to clone myself surrounding the middle of the poster but having a bad and good side to each the way I will do this will be using different colours to show emotion.

Initial idea poster 5-My final poster idea will be to create a all text poster with important information on.

Jonathan Barnbrook

To start my research off Jonathan Barnbrook I decided to look at some of his work from looking at his website I can see that he creates posters for bus stops. These posters are very controversial and express the thought of many people into a poster.

This poster shows me that Johnathan Barnbrook's work is very political and controversial. This captures the target audiences attention by making the poster appear like it is from VW but whilst you read it you realise that it is against this brand.

From looking at these posters from Johnathan Barnbrook we know                                        that he is very passionate about the uk weapons industry from

looking at a lot of his posters I can tell that he wants to help

a lot of immoral laws and business in the world. The                                                                cultural aspects of this work is that the money being spent on these

weapons could be used to help people and use for better reasons.

The history behind Johnathan Barnbrook he first got into                                                        typography this explains a lot of why he uses a lot of text in his

designs. I may use this in my posters but I feel it would be more

effective for me to have images as the main focus of my poster

with text being the next focus however I will still like to focus on

making the text relevant and have the text fit the aesthics of each                                          poster.

‌Helmo is a French studio set up in 2007 by Thomas Couderc and Clément Vauchez met 10 years before opening the studio in this time they were perfecting there graphic design aesthetics. They use minimalist solutions where they use several layers on an very ordinary and boring object to fix the images and make them look better. Nothing about there work is accidental they use the helmos trademark style to create there work.

SIANA_19_WEB_01.jpg

This work from Helmo is about artificial intelligence I really enjoy the colour way of this poster. I really enjoy the effect they have used to change the colour of the person I think this contrasts well between the background and the neon blue circle they have added to this poster. I think the blue circle really focuses your attention towards the subject.

This poster differs from Johnathan Barnbrooks work a lot, this poster uses the images and the effect to show there work whereas Johnathan Barnbrook uses a lot of typography in his poster designs. This poster from Helmo doesn't show much emotion or doesn't attract any controversy whereas Johnathan Barnbrooks work is mainly about the story behind the poster and shows lots of emotion and is very controversial.

These images are a collaboration between Helmo and Thomas Dimetto for a commercial event. It is a light and colour display of pictures in the window.

In these posters they are using a very mutual black background with the subjects being the models with a red bird as a effect. I really like this effect because the colour of the birds make the subjects even more of a focus.

From looking at his website I have discovered that Kyle Lambert is an L.A based artists that is most well known for creating movie posters. He has worked for some of the biggest companies in the world these include Apple Marvel and Disney.

www.kylelambert.com. (n.d.). Kyle Lambert - Illustrator / Movie Poster Artist. [online] Available at: http://www.kylelambert.com/.

This poster was create by Kyle in 2016                                                                                     for this poster he wanted to incorporate                                                                                   the 80s era that the series is set in.

For his inspiration for this project he researched into

some legendary film poster artists such as Drew Struzan,                                                        Bob Peak, John Alvin and Richard Amsel. I think in this

poster you can really see the similarities between this poster

and star wars posters created by Drew Struzan.

The thing I like best about this poster is how many aspects of

the tv series he has managed to get into this one poster.

He has put 10 of the most important characters in the show

in the centre of the poster this brings attention to each one

This is something I could incorporate into my posters by                                                         using Different issues as the characters to bring more

awareness to each issue faced during lockdown.

From Comparing these two posters I have noticed that these posters both have the main characters of the series/Film in the centre with other characters surrounding them this is a very effective way to create a poster because it is showing many different characters without using a a lot of space on the poster. The work of Kyle Lambert could also be compared to Helmos work the reason I think you could compare there work is that they both use colour is similar ways with the dark background with blue and red shining through the middle.

I think all these cameras take very similar quality photos however the 1st camera is very time consuming to set up to take photos I think I am going to use phone 1 or 2 to take my photos for my posters.

From researching different software I have found an article on the adobe blog This explains which adobe program is best for every product you may want to create. The program they suggest is adobe illustrator however they mention that photoshop is a good alternative to illustrator. I have also got feedback that says that I should look into InDesign. Therefore I am going to use each of these programs to create a rough poster. I will use the same design and pictures to make this test fair.

Whilst I was practising InDesign I wanted to try and edit some text in different shapes this would help with my poster designs because it will be easy to warp text around different objects.

I also decided to practice these text

warps on photoshop. This wasn't very

Hard to complete but was defiantly

easier on InDesign.

From reading a blog about poster design with the adobe programs it suggests to create the layout and the text in adobe InDesign and the graphics in photoshop this is something I had thought about and would be something I want to practice.

Mock up poster 1 evaluation-This is the one I like least out of all these mock up posters I think this is because there isn't an effect and that it looks very simple. To fix this issue with my final poster I am going to use a dual lighting effect to make this poster look more professional. One thing I like about this poster is that it has some information about mental health during lockdown.

Mock up poster 2 evaluation-I think that this is my favourite poster out of all the mock ups I've done I think this because the effect has worked very well with the mask.I also really like this poster because it has a lot of meaning in the text and is about my theme.

Mock up poster 3 evaluation-I also really like this poster I think the effect works well and also looks very professional however I need to add more text in my final design. This is something I will do in post production.

From looking at this Total recall poster straight away I noticed that Kyle used the red and blue colour way just from looking at the gallery of work on his website I can see that he likes using these colours. Another similarity between this work and Kyles other work is the placement of characters he has placed the main characters in the middle of the poster with some smaller characters below them. This poster was created for the 30th anniversary of total recall the poster was to promote the 4k remastered version. This poster was created with the programs adobe photoshop on a Mac and procreate for iPad pro.

I want to research into different effects and practice them by creating a mock up poster for each effect. To practice these effects I am going to use the same picture for each effect. This will make this research fair to each effect.I am going to be using this picture for each effect.I will have to use different pictures if the effect is not possible with this picture.

Colour theory

To research different colour theory I will be using the mock up posters I will also be researching into different effects after I have experimented with these colours and I will test each effect with each colour theory.

Colormatters.com. (2014). Basic Color Theory. [online] Available at: https://www.colormatters.com/color-and-design/basic-color-theory.

From reading this website on colour theory I have learnt that there are 3 main categories for colour theory, Primary secondary and tertiary. Primary colours are the traditional colours these colours cannot be formed by mixing other colours together.

Secondary colours are orange, green and purple these colours can be formed by mixing the primary colours. Tertiary colours are Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green & yellow-green
These are the colours formed by mixing a primary and a secondary colour.

Colour harmony

Colour harmony delivers a visual interest and a sense of order. Colour harmony is the art of having two or more colours that compliment and contrast each other to make them more aesthetically pleasing.

The Paper. (2017). Color Theory: Color Harmonies | The Paper Blog. [online] Available at: https://blog.thepapermillstore.com/color-theory-color-harmonies/.

In this article it mentions that there are six colour harmonies that are usually used in design these are Complementary colours, Split complementary colours,

Analogous colours, Triadic harmonies, Tetradic harmonies, Monochromatic harmonies.

Complementary colours- These colours are found on the opposite side of the colour wheel from each other. The opposing relationship creates a high contrast which makes it the hardest to be successful. These colours are very vibrant and if not careful when using them can be overwhelming to every bodies eyes. When using these colours you may a black or white tint this would dull the vibrant colours.

Split complementary colours-This colour harmony uses one main colour and two secondary colours. This harmony is used when you want to make an impact but not make it too flashy. This is very similar to the complementary harmony however it is less aggressive.

Analogous colours-In this colour harmony the colours are found next to each other on a colour wheel this is very calming and often found in nature. To create this harmony you need to chose one main colour and two or three analogous colours and shades. To use this harmony you need to seek a calm and unified look that doesn't take away from your primary message.

Triadic harmonies-This colour harmony employs three colours that are evenly spread on the colour wheel. To keep your designs balanced you should have a base colour and use the others as secondary accent colours this is similar to split complementary colours. To use this harmony you want to create drama without being too intense. Whilst using this harmony you can dial down the drama using tints and shades.

Tetradic harmonies-There are two types of tetradic harmonies, rectangular and square. These harmonies use four colours arranged in two complementary pairs. This harmony offers variety and tends to be very eye catching. However because it uses four colours it can be very hard to create a balance. For this harmony you want one primary main colour and three accent colours. You want to apply this harmony when you are designing something that is colour coded or for a showier subject matter.

Monochromic harmonies-This colour harmony uses a single colour with different shades and tints. This creates a simple clean aesthetic. You should use this harmony when you want to create a relatable and calm design.

For each of my posters I want to assign a different colour theory to chose which poster I assign the colour theory to I will test them all on the same image. This will be the image that I use to edit with colour theory -

Gibbs reflective cycle

Describe: I have been researching into many different areas such as colour theory and effects. During this research I had feedback to learn how to use InDesign this is something that took time to try and learn therefore I wouldn't have as much time to research my other areas.

Feelings: I feel like learning a new program will help my skills in media in the long run however I will not use it in this project because it doesn't suit how I want to create my posters. I feel like it was worth learning even though I won't use it its given me ideas that I will use.

Evaluation: The things that have worked well in my research are mock up posters and researching into different effects to use in my final posters. Instead of creating a lot of mock up posters during research I will create them whilst doing production and then change these mock ups into 1st drafts.

Analysis: I think that this research went well because I have researched into each area that I wanted to and improved my ideas throughout. During researching colour theory I lost the image that I was working on so I had to change the image this wasn't ideal. I think I should have evaluated and asked for feedback earlier so I could have scheduled time to learn new skills.

Conclusion: Overall I have learnt a lot from doing this research. I think that the areas of research I enjoyed the most was creating the mock up posters and looking at different effects.

Action plan: in the future I will be asking for feedback throughout each stage of research to make sure there's nothing I could add before moving on.

‌This posters message is also to let it out this is a good message towards mental health and the purpose for this poster is to try and help people that are struggling with mental health. This is a very similar to the other poster the reason for this Is because they are by the same charity this is something I could incorporate into my posters and have them all be the same message.

This is very different to the other posters I've seen I really like the way they have used the yellow tape around the person with the important question on the from. I think I could use the idea of having a question as my main message in one of my posters. The message of this poster is not very clear that its talking about mental health until you see the companies name.

I really like how this poster uses the outline of the head with the footsteps linking to the message of taking the first few steps. This posters purpose is taking the step towards better mental health. This purpose is clear that its talking about taking the first steps but its not immediately clear that it is talking about mental health.
